Aims of the Project

The project includes four different kinds of activities – teaching, conducting research (including the publication of two articles in scientific journals), publishing books and organizing of the workshop and conference.

In the field of teaching, two existing courses will be innovated at the undergraduate level and new specialization within the master study programmes will be set up. The preparation of innovations within the existing course “European Union” will be launched before the official start of the project in order to provide the course in the innovated form in the first year of the project. Seminars of that course will newly contain simulations of bargaining and decision-making processes in the European Union. During the winter semester of the first year, the new content of the lectures and seminars for the course “European Political Systems” will be encroached. Also during the winter semester of the first year, the structure and content of the new course “European Public Policies” will be prepared and it will be implemented in the winter semester of the second year. The content and format of new course “Development Policies within the European Union” will be prepared during the summer semester of the first year and implemented in the winter semester of the second year. Also the promotion of the specialization newly offered to students at master level will start at the summer semester of the first year. The structure of the courses “Development and Neighbourhood Policies of the European Union” and “Foreign and Security Policies within the European Union” will be prepared in the winter semester of the second year, so they will be ready for the implementation in the summer semester of the second year.

In addition to standard University method of courses evaluation (conducted through the electronic form filled up by students), the evaluation of the courses will be provided by students at the last lecture and seminar of each course, where students will be asked to complete the questionnaire prepared by the chair holder. In subsequent years, the courses will be taught in the same semester as for the first time, while the content and structure of the courses may be adjusted based on student evaluations or experiences of chair holder. All mentioned steps will significantly improve the form of teaching about European integration within the Department curricula. Particularly, it will intensify the interest of students in the European integration by introducing European Union as lively policy-making system and not only as static set of institutions and actors.

In the area of research, the policy-making process within the European Union (from agenda setting to implementation of policies) will be observed throughout the first year of the project with the aim of distinguish its phases and relevant actors during the first year of the project. The results of these observations will be discussed at the workshop at the end of the first year of the project and then they will be published in the form of monograph during the second year. Simultaneously the article for the publication in the scientific journal will be prepared. The systemic observation of the policy-making processes in the field of external policies is planned for the second year, whereas the results of this research will be published in the form of monograph and article in the scientific journal published in the third year and they will be also discussed on the conference organized by the chair holder at the end of the third year of the project. Publication activities will promote the increased interest of academics and even the public in the Czech Republic in the policymaking process within the European Union.
